Where are your manners?

November 02, 2008

This past Halloween was one of the first, in a very long time, where we had bought candy for kids that were going to be knocking on our front door.  I have to admit, I was totally excited about it.  It’s been about 8 years since we’ve lived in a private home and the apartments we’ve lived in since didn’t see much Halloween action.  In anticipation, I sent Sean out for tons of candy.  He protested plenty, insisting that we might have one or two Trick-or-Treaters.

Things definitely started off slowly.  I think the first kid showed up around 7:30.  That seemed kind of late to me.  I can remember getting home from school and wanting to hit the streets right away.  Maybe things have changed or I’ve just forgotten how it used to be.

One thing I know for sure though is that we didn’t act like the kids do these days. Yeah we might have sprayed shaving cream on stop signs and wrote our name in the streets with Silly String.  I wish I would have seen more of that and less of what we experienced.

In the span of 2 hours, we had about 40 kids come to our door.  A few of them were really polite and said Trick-or-Treat and even a thank you here and there.  But the majority of the little beasts were rude. One kid actually rang our door bell a total of 6 times and then he started violently knocking on our front door.  I whipped it open so fast and yelled BOOOOOOO, he almost peed his pants.  I really wish he had. His mother was standing with him the entire time and never said a word.  My mother would have whopped my ass, taken all my candy away and ended Halloween right then and there, had I acted the same.

Then there were the ones who actually grabbed the door knob and opened the door before I even got downstairs. blank stare  It wasn’t just a one time deal either. When did that become acceptable?  Finally I started locking the door after each round of kids came through.

Oh but it doesn’t even stop with the kids.  One parent made her little girl hand out Avon booklets to the homeowners.  Another mother dropped her business card into our mailbox. Both the business card and the Avon book went right into the garbage.  What on earth were they thinking?

The biggest issue I had with the evening was the door to door car service for all of these kids.  Out of all the kids, maybe 5 of them walked from house to house.  The rest were carted from one door to the next by car.  Not very fun and also, not very safe.  We had a stream of cars up and down our block for 2 straight hours with kids darting in between them and running all over the place getting from one car to the next house back to the car to the next house.

I can remember so vividly walking around our neighborhood with our flashlights and friends, running to doors and then across the nicely manicured lawns to the next door step…over and over and over again.  Apparently those days are gone.  And I think that’s really sad.  It really made me want to get out there and show them how Trick-or-Treating is really done.  Maybe we’ll do that next year.

The Blog is back

November 01, 2008

I had to get this baby back up and running because I joined Nablopomoyayawhateva, which starts today for the month of November.

What is Nablopomo?  Well it’s very simple really.  You post every day for a month.  That’s it.  Blogging.  Amazing.  I’m hoping it will give me a nice kick in the ass to start blogging regularly.  I’ve actually missed blogging.  That has to mean something.  Maybe it just means that I have so much to say and I need a place to say it, other than 140+ characters at a time.

I mean, Twitter is great.  I love Twitter and use it everyday.  It’s quick, it’s easy, it’s fun, it’s all about the “social media”.  I’m still a blogger though and I like having this space to share more of me with you, even if you don’t want to read it.  cheese

I’m wondering if I really need to say that the new design is a work in progress.  It’s not finished. I’m still tweaking this and adjusting that.  And it might look completely different tomorrow.  But one thing that is new and will be staying is The Cutest of the Cute - Daily Kid Photos.  I have so many photos of all the kids and some of them will simply make you die.  I’m all about bringing the cute that kills!  wink

Alright, I better stop while I’m ahead or I’ll share 30 days worth of stuff in this one post and then what will I do?

Good Times, Blogging Salad.

Sean ripped this comic out of the paper a few weeks ago and I just happened to come across it on my desk today while I was cleaning.  It makes me laugh everytime.  This is something that Windy does whenever we leave any type of glass out.  One morning we woke up to find a cup stuck to her head and her making these pathetic little meeeeow’s.  I love cats.

I have never been a huge Paris Hilton fan.  I actually didn’t like her at all for awhile, especially when “The Simple Life”  was on tv.  I had no real good reason to dislike the girl actually. It’s weird how you can not like someone you don’t even know.  what’s up with that?  But anyway, lately, she’s grown on me.  And now after seeing this video…I fucking love her!  Maybe love is too strong a word, but I don’t care.  This is hilarious!

Summertime Blues

July 21, 2008

I think lately, I’ve been a little depressed.  Nothing serious or requiring medical attention.  I still get up everyday and I work, and I twitter and sometimes I post really cute photos of Twister on Flickr…

But I have no real desire to do anything.  I missed last weeks One Local Summer Challenge and it looks like this week as well.  I’ve been getting a shitload of tomatoes in the CSA Share, which is great…but how many things can you make with ONE local ingredient.  I had all good intentions on getting to the Farmer’s Market on Saturday morning, but then I just didn’t go.  So no more local stuff in this house except for tomatoes and maybe an onion or two.

I think part of my problem is the heat.  I always drag a bit when it gets really hot.  And it’s really hot.

I think the other part of the problem is that I’m really missing Stormy.  I know that probably sounds silly, but his presence was such a huge part of my day for the past 10 years.  It’s hard not to wake up and think about him, and work and think about him, and relax and watch tv and think about him and go to bed and think about him.  I’m not sure I really allowed myself to grieve for him when he passed away.  I think a large part of me just didn’t want to accept that he was gone and now here I am, almost a month later, and there is just no more denial left.

So, I’m trying really really hard to be patient with myself.  I keep telling myself that I will not beat myself up for all the things I’m not doing that I think I should be doing.  That vicious cycle gets me nowhere.  I’ll continue to do what I’ve been doing and I know eventually things will be better.  My life is filled with blessings and I remind myself of that every chance I get.  Every one of those blessings make each day a little brighter.

One Local Summer Week Five

July 08, 2008

I’m such a huge ass slacker.  I made my one local summer meal on Saturday.  And I took the photo and planned to blog about it Saturday and then Sunday came and I told myself, blog it dammit and I never did.  I totally forgot about it yesterday because yesterday was just HELL DAY!  So, I’m way late and all, but I’m still playing along.

About mid-morning Saturday I decided to whip together a little brunch.  Some of it local, some of it not.  The local included Blueberry waffles!  YUMMY!  And a Green Pepper & Onion American Cheese Omelet!  My favorite omelet ever.

One Local Summer Week

I also made hash browns and sausage and Mojitos - all of which were not local.  But together, everything was so delicious!  I love breakfast food.

Okay, let’s get down to it…

Ingredients for Omelet
1/2 green pepper chopped
1/2 onion chopped
3 large eggs
2 slices American Cheese
Salt & Pepper to taste

Directions
Spray a frying pan with spam or lightly coat with butter.  In a small bowl, crack open eggs and add green pepper and onion.  Whisk together.  Pour into frying pan.  Sprinkle with salt and pepper.  Let eggs start to set a bit on the bottom, and then flip over to cook the other side.  Add cheese to the top and cover frying pan with lid so that the cheese gets all melty.  mmmm cheese.

Ingredients for Waffles
3 egg yolks, beaten
1 2/3 cups milk
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 cup melted butter
3 egg whites, stiffly beaten
2/3 cup blueberries

Directions
In a medium bowl, whisk together egg yolks and milk. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Stir in butter, and set mixture aside for about 30 minutes. Preheat a lightly greased waffle iron.  Fold egg whites and 2/3 cup blueberries into the mixture. Scoop portions of the mixture into the prepared waffle iron, and cook until golden brown.

Not Local

These Litter Chests are such a neat idea.  We’ve been trying to come up with a plan for the litter box in our new house and this seems like it would be a perfect fit.  Discreet, yet it does the job perfectly.  We’ll be adding this to our list of things to get for the new house.
